The Best Hotel I've Ever Stayed In - The Excalibur Hotel In Las Vegas
By far the most fun hotel I've ever stayed in is the Excalibur Hotel (click here) in downtown Las Vegas. A year ago, a good girlfriend of mine and I took our newly-turned-21 year old daughters to Las Vegas to celebrate this milestone of a birthday. My friend made all the arrangements and I couldn't have been more pleased with the hotel she chose... The medieval castle called 'The Excalibur'.
The Excalibur is conveniently located right on Las Vegas Boulevard, the mail drag in town. It sits between the Egyptian pyramid Luxor Hotel, and the transplanted Manhattan skyline of the New York, New York Hotel. Only a block down is the Monte Carlo Hotel, home of famed magician Lance Burton, and directly across the street is the MGM Grand Hotel. The beautiful fountains of the Bellagio Hotel are within walking distance, as is the Eifel Tower of the Paris Hotel.
We stayed in a Standard Room...guest suites are available along with "wide screen rooms" which come with wide screen televisions. Our standard room was very nice... clean, spacious and comfortable. We had a nice view of the Luxor Hotel which really lights up at night. Us moms shared a room while our daughters had one to themselves. My friend and I have reputations for being over-protective mothers, but the security in the Excalibur was top notch and we didn't worry about our girls at all. (Well... maybe a tiny bit...it's a hard habit to break!)
The girls wanted to go 'clubbing' at the Luxor next door. My friend and I were able to contain our paranoid mom feelings and say "Okay, have a great time." One reason we felt good saying this, is that there is a tunnel that connects the Luxor and the Excalibur...it's much safer to take the tunnel than walking out on the street at night. Las Vegas is Las Vegas, after all - Sin City. There is also a tunnel that connects the Excalibur to the New York Hotel. We enjoyed taking the tunnel over there, as it was summer when we went, and it was a balmy 107 degrees outside.
While the girls were clubbing away at the Luxor, my friend and I enjoyed the casino in the Excalibur. The casino was clean and well secured. The bar areas were equally as nice and we were pleased that the prices of the drinks at the bars were not outrageous. All in all, our first night there was very pleasant.
The second night there we chose to see the headline act of the Excalibur...the Tournament of Kings. Imagine traveling back in time to the days of King Arthur and the nights of the round table... well, that's exactly what you'll do when you see the Tournament of Kings. We saw none other than King Arthur himself on horseback, jousting with his arch enemy. We saw the other kings of the realm jousting each other as well. Yes... there were real horses with real Knights and real Lances charging full speed at each other. Warning... if you sit in the bottom few rows, expect to get a little dirt on you! (Just a little though... it's not bad!)
While we enjoyed this magical show, we were served a dinner that could have been on the menu during the medieval ages. We had soup, (delicious) and a cornish game hen & sliced potatoes, cooked to perfection. The only drawback was... there was no silverware! You had to eat with your hands just as the people did back in the day. Luckily I had stashed a plastic knife from an earlier meal into my purse so we were able to cut our hens rather than pull them apart. Some folks say we cheated...well, we're card carrying city girls, what can I say. This had to be one of the most enjoyable shows I have ever seen. The cost for the Tournament of Kings was $68.00 per person, but I think this varies depending on the day. We were there over a weekend. I highly recommend the show no matter where in Vegas you're staying.
The rates for the Excalibur hotel vary greatly depending on the time of year, or the day you stay there. The room rates for the standard rooms range from $33.00 to $146.00 per night. If you go to their website, www.excalibur.com, you can check the rates for all of their rooms for the days you will be visiting.
Another tip I can give you if you're planning on visiting Las Vegas...the bus. There is a bus line that runs up and down Las Vegas Boulevard and stops at all of the major hotels. Rather than walking out in the heat and encountering the not so savory folks that line the streets trying to sell you tickets to VIP rooms, we bought day passes and took the bus up and down the street. We visited the Bellagio and watched the fountain show, we had champagne in the Eifel tower, shopped in Caesar's Palace and saw the pirate ship at Treasure Island. It was a grand weekend which was made all the more pleasurable by our lovely hotel, the Excalibur. Our daughters had a great time, and us paranoid moms survived quite nicely! I can't wait to go back.

Can underage minors go inside casinos like Circus Circus or the Venetian in Las Vegas?
I am getting married in two weeks at a wedding chapel in Las Vegas. My mom and his parents are going to a show that night and then they are going to play the slot machines. He and I and his four friends that are coming and will be chaparoned by his parents want to go out that night. There is no way that my husband and I can have a night of romance because I am staying in a room with my mom and he is staying in a room with his parents and the four boys are going to stay in a room together each couple sharing a bed. (Its kind of funny because my husband is formerly gay and his friends are all gay so the one ones who are going to have any romance are those four boys lol lol. My future husband and I are both 18, two of the boys are 18, but two are still 17. Like my husband and his friends and his younger brother want to go where they have a paint ball place but I'm not sure where it is. I guess boys will be boys even if they are gay. We are going to hang out at the pool too. Like what is it like at Circus Circus? We are staying for two nights.

Where can I find TALL and SMALL Jeans?
I live in Las Vegas, NV and I'm trying to find a store where I can buy Tall and SMALL jeans. I have ~6 1 but only weight ~150 lbs. Places like Casual Male XL pant sizes START at waist 32" and I need a waist size of like 28" or maybe 30", but 30 may be too large still with an length of possibly 32-34. I'm not sure because I can never find a size that will fit me at a normal store. Is there a place I can buy pants like this?

REVIEW
Vegas is where fortunes are created and fortunes are lost. "The Las Vegas Chronicles" tells the history of the people who made Las Vegas, and what has become of them over the centuries, from eccentrics who tossed millions at getting the city's legend gang, stories of gangsters, politics, and the modern atmosphere of keeping the games in favor of the Casino. With plenty of stories, "The Las Vegas Chronicles" is a choice collection for anyone who wants to understand the many twists and turns of Las Vegas's long history. -- Midwest Book Review
The Las Vegas Chronicles by Andrew McLean is a truly remarkable read. After doing extensive research for my Las Vegas police and Mob books, I figured I knew most everything worth knowing about Sin City. At least that’s what I thought until I read this book. In The Las Vegas Chronicles Mr. McLean accurately tells his readers the history of the city, who the key players were—both good and bad, the celebrities, the gaming, trivia, it’s all there. I highly recommend this book to all readers. And if you’re a history buff, a Las Vegas fan, or a bit of both, The Las Vegas Chronicles is a must read. -- Denny Griffin, author Policing Las Vegas, The Battle for Las Vegas, CULLOTTA
"Although I lived and worked in Las Vegas, Andrew J. McLean’s, The Las Vegas Chronicles is a highly educational and enjoyable read. It seems that with so many subjects, the facts are hard to come by. Factual history is really the core of civilization. We also tend to fictionalize so much of what is our history and Andrew McLean seems to have done his homework of what really happened and has now shared his findings with the rest of the world. The subject of Las Vegas has always captured the imagination and being that it’s history is so unique, I couldn't put this book down. I witnessed much of what The Las Vegas Chronicles described although until now I never knew how or why so many events happened. The book is laid out in a very organized way so that the reader can fully see the transitions and metamorphous of Las Vegas in chronological order. I sometimes ask myself if I am going to miss something by not reading a particular book The historical information makes this book a great addition to one’s library." -- Jay Rankin, author of Under the Neon Sky...A Las Vegas Doorman’s Story
"A wonderfully lucid and fascinating book of the Las Vegas scene during the mobster days and the transition to corporate ownership of the casinos. A fascinating book of stories, facts, and illustrations of one of the most interesting cities in the world. Andy’s personality shows though in his fluid writing style. A most enjoyable must-read book.” -- "BR" Bob L. Riley, Aerospace Engineer retired
"Very enjoyable and interesting read. Anyone with a gambling/Vegas background will be interested in this book." -- Al Rainosek, Ph.D.

From the 1970s through the mid-1980s, the Chicago Outfit dominated organized crime in Las Vegas. Unreported revenue, known as the "skim," from Outfit-controlled casinos made its way out of Vegas by the bagful, ending up in the coffers of the Windy City crime bosses and their confederates around the Midwest. To ensure the smooth flow of cash, the gangsters installed a front man with no criminal background, Allen R. Glick, as the casino owner of record, Frank "Lefty" Rosenthaal as the real boss of casino operations, and Tony Spilotro as the ultimate enforcer, who'd do whatever it took to protect their interests. It wasn't long before Spilotoro, also in charge of Vegas street crime, was known as the "King of the Strip." Federal and local law enforcement, recognizing the need to rid the casinos of the mob and shut down Spilotro's rackets, declared war on organized crime. The Battle for Las Vegas relates the story of the fight between the tough buys on both sides, told in large part by the agents and detectives who knew they had to win.Author: Dennis Griffin

Rick Lax was paranoid to begin with. He saw lies everywhere. And when he saw them, he spoke up. But when his girlfriend gets conned by a violent drug dealer, nothing Rick does seems to help. So what if he misses the next lie? What if spotting them isn’t enough to protect against them? What if exposing lies puts him in even more danger?
Terrified of being conned himself, Rick bolts for Vegas, deception capital of the world, to learn the game and how to guard against it. Rick meets deceivers of all kinds, from back-alley hustlers and poker pros to the biggest headliners on the Strip. During the course of his unconventional education, which includes passing himself off as an octogenarian, being exposed as a card counter, and picking up a hooker (inadvertently, of course), Rick gets closer to becoming a human lie detector…but at what cost?
By the end of Fool Me Once, you’ll know why seventh graders make better liars than college students, how to use a handful of rice as a polygraph, and how to bluff a poker pro. But above all, you’ll understand why some things in life are a lot worse than being fooled.

Urban gambling, linked to poverty, crime and corruption, was once considered a blight on US cities. Gambling then followed the exodus of Americans into the suburbs after World War II and now, at the beginning of the 21st century, most Americans live within a four-hour drive of a casino. What explains the success of places like Las Vegas? The self-contained casino resort removes gambling and its social problems from cities and provides Americans with the comfort of gambling in a setting matched to their suburban lifestyle. In a detailed look at the growth of the earliest casino resorts to the "pleasure palaces" and riverboat casinos of today, "Suburban Xanadu" locates the rise of the casino resort in suburbanization and the significance of this development for today.Author: David G. "Fund raisers, given their flaws and fineness, working in flawed and fine institutions with flawed and fine clients, need to carry out their everyday tasks of decency and joy here and now. . . . This book is about thinking with care and grace about everyday grit."In her brilliant and provocative new book, Ethical Decision Making in Fund Raising, author and philosophy professor Marilyn Fischer provides conceptual tools with which a nonprofit can thoroughly examine the ethics of how and from whom it seeks donations. Using the book's Ethical Decision-Making Model, the author explains how fund raisers can use their basic value commitments to organizational mission, professional relationships, and personal integrity as day-to-day touchstones for making balanced, ethical, fund-raising decisions.
For ethically troubling situations that have no clear-cut solutions, the book shows how to frame these dilemmas as ongoing dramatic narratives. Using conceptual tools of sympathetic understanding, attention to social and temporal context, and clusters of philanthropic virtues, the Ethical Decision-Making Model guides us in thinking our way to ethically sound resolutions. Through this process, we can sustain and enrich the circle of giving of the philanthropic gift economy.
The book also examines day-to-day issues of fund raising: privacy and confidentiality; conflicts of interest such as finder's fees and commission-based pay; corporate philanthropy, including sponsorships and cause-related marketing; and fostering cultural diversity. Each chapter concludes with discussion questions and additional case studies for readers' reflection and analysis.
Ethical Decision Making in Fund Raising is a fascinating look at the history of philanthropy in its many social forms and historical contexts, as well as an exuberant manifesto for nonprofits on making clear ethical thinking an effective corporate tool.

If Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn had come of age at the end of the 20th century looking for an all-American adventure, they probably would've headed for Vegas.
They'd have been hard-pressed to go on a wilder ride than the one taken by Tom Breitling and Tim Poster to the top of the famed Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino.
Call them the Odds Couple.
Breitling is the kid who lives next door if you grow up in Burnsville, Minnesota. He never saw a hundred dollar bill or The Godfather until he went to college.
Poster comes from a family of oddsmakers who reach for the Doritos on football Sundays and scream for the point spread. He was whistling Sinatra and booking games at his Las Vegas high school.
Their unlikely friendship began in college over an $8 veal parmigiana sandwich that led to a partnership in a hotel reservation business. Starting with a desk, a chair, a pillow, and a telephone, Tim and Tom grew a company that they sold during the dot.com boom for $105 million. This allows Tim to pursue his childhood dream of owning a casino and bringing back the glory days of Vegas.
When Tim ups the odds and raises the limits to give gamblers the best game in town, a craps player nicknamed "Mr. Royalty," who's on one of the hottest winning streaks in history, heads for The Nugget. When he begins to take Tom and Tim for millions, the partnership is put to the test. But Tim refuses to back off on the odds or the high limits, telling his partner, "It's a ballsy proposition here. It's gonna be a roller coaster ride. But we don't have a public company to answer to. It's just you and me."
When Mr. Royalty rolls twenty-two consecutive passes and rakes in a mountain of chips, he takes Tim and Tom to the brink. They must figure out a way to hold up The House.
Just as they do, the roller coaster ride really gets rolling—and the ride becomes crazier than they'd ever imagined.

Many people spend their lives searching for the means to acquire tremendous financial wealth. They look to external resources to give them what they want, and are ultimately disappointed when their dreams don't turn out the way they had planned. They either become incredibly wealthy at the expense of their spiritual well being, family, and friends, or they never acquire the riches they've aspired to, and in their disappointment, they discover they've lost all sense of self-worth.The Wealthy Spirit is the only book that offers an approach to achieving both spiritual and financial wealth. Through a series of daily affirmations that focus on the reader's internal strength and capacity for change, this book will set them on a path toward personal enlightenment and wealth in body, mind, and spirit.
Using a day-to-day approach, readers will learn six keys:
--Think positive. Like mind over matter, mind over money begins with believing you deserve it and can get it.
--Send out ships. You can wait for your ship to come in, but if you don't send any out, it's going to be a long wait.
--Count your money. Money is a game and you have to know the score. The money score will tell you how well you're doing at steps one and two.
--Swim with dolphins. Being "in the swim" will depend largely on who you're swimming with. Find "your people" and avoid sharks.
--Survive the storms. You must weather interior storms as well as exterior ones. Persistence is key.
--Seek balance and enlightenment. Only from their perspective will you know when you have "enough."
The Wealthy Spirit offers readers peace of mind to help them build financial muscle and a successful, stress-free life.
